This week is New York State School Board Recognition Week.
The
board was recognized recently for its efforts on behalf of
Niskayuna students.
Niskayuna High School Craft Fair, Haunted House
slated for Saturday, October 30
The annual Craft Fair
and Haunted House at Niskayuna High School are slated for this
Saturday. The Craft Fair will be open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., while
the Haunted House will run from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Don't miss these
popular events!
High School collects school supplies for Iraqi
children this week -- October 25-29
Niskayuna High School
social studies teachers and students are seeking help to send
school supply kits to Iraqi children. Donations of supplies,
money to help ship the supplies and time to help sort donations

Talking about student stress, academic integrity and
home-school communications ...
The Board of Education
is hosting several educational issues forums this school year to
discuss and explore various topics with the public. The first is

Twenty-one Niskayuna
High School students have been named "Commended" students in the
2005 National Merit Scholarship Program, for their scores on the
PSAT. They are: Abigail Alger, Erin Armenia, Sadra Azizi,
Monisha Datta, Kayla Eisman, Kevin Fuller, Benjamin Gifford,
Jennifer Kleindienst, Caley Kovler, Kevin Kreifels, Jeffrey
Leppert, Emily Levine, Michelle Lobo, Sylvia Lou, Robert Manor,
Anjali Nirmalan, Adelaide Pagano, Elizaveta Plotnikov, Manuel
Possolo, Katherine Sheehan and Alec Wilson. Congratulations!
1,000-Book Kid Program begins love of reading early
Each of the elementary
schools offer this free program to families with preschoolers.

Van Antwerp students read for a cause

Eighty-four Van Antwerp Middle School students spent a recent
Friday evening (October 1) participating in a read-a-thon at the school to
raise funds for the Double H Hole in the Woods Camp (a camp for
critically ill children). Together they raised $4,808.18 --
great job students!

Best of Nisk-Art Show reception tonight
A reception for the
Best of Nisk-Art show, now on display in the Nisk-Art Gallery
(at Niskayuna High School) is scheduled for Thursday, October 14
at 6:30 p.m. Work from more than 100 students is on display --
congratulations students!
Special Education forum postponed
The Community Education
forum on Special Education that was listed in the district
calendar for October 13 has been postponed. The new date will be
advertised when it has been determined.

Birchwood Elementary welcomes new principal, new
school year

Birchwood students and
staff created a mural at the school to welcome new Principal
Debra Berndt (above) and the new school year. The mural features
giant birch trees with handprints for leaves. Great job
everyone!
Students recognized in U.S. scholarship program
Congratulations to nine Niskayuna High School
seniors, for being named National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalists (based on their PSAT
scores). They are: Scott Brainard, Elizabeth Brown, Michael Corey, Danielle Dignon,
Anthony Guzman, Alice Lee, David Leib, Steven Leib and Denise Zong. Less than one percent
of U.S. high school seniors are named semifinalists. Congratulations!
