William Wales takes reins as next K-12 Math
Director
The Niskayuna Central School District Board of
Education appointed William Wales to the
position of director of mathematics K-12,
effective July 1.
For the past five years, Wales has served as the
coordinator of math and technology in the
Schenectady City School District. He previously
served as assistant principal for the Schoharie
Junior/Senior High School and supervised the
district’s summer school program. Wales taught
honors math courses and pre-calculus at
Shenendehowa High School, and completed his
administrative internship while at Shenendehowa.
He began his educational career in 1996 teaching
math in the Lake George School District.
“Bill has a clear vision of integrating math and
science as well as experience and interest in
the effective use of technology to enhance
instruction,” said Superintendent of Schools
Kevin Baughman. “He joins our leadership team
with strong, positive recommendations.”
Wales earned permanent certification as a school
district administrator from The College of Saint
Rose. He has a master’s of science degree from
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, and a
bachelor’s degree from New York State University
at Albany.
Among his professional affiliations, Wales is
Region B County Chair for the Association of
Math Teachers of New York State, and is a member
of the Capital Area Math Supervisors. He is also
an adjunct instructor at SUNY Albany.
Wales replaces Douglas Lohnas, a long-time
director of mathematics at Niskayuna, who
retired in June.
