Van Antwerp Middle School held its third annual
Community Day on Thursday, Nov. 10. The day
offers students an opportunity to step outside
of their usual routine and attend a series of
workshops on skills or hobbies ranging from
guitar and horse care to podcasting, automotive
tech, juggling, babysitting and all kinds of
arts and crafts. A day before Veteran's Day, the
theme of community was reinforced by a
building-wide assembly that featured remarks on
that theme from two special guests,
Superintendent Susan Kay Salvaggio and Major
Patrick Chaisson, deputy commander, Recruiting
and Retention
Battalion, New York Army National Guard.

Major Chaisson are pictured here.) The day came
to an end with another school-wide assembly in
which students were treated to the music of
Flame, a 10-piece band from Gloversville
comprised entirely of members with
developmental/physical disabilities including
autism, Down's syndrome, and blindness. The
band's mission is to change the way the public
views people with disabilities.
