Board of Education seeks public input in search for new Superintendent of Schools

The Niskayuna Board of Education is seeking public input through an online survey on the district website and four public forums in January, as it begins the search process for a new Superintendent of Schools. Current superintendent Dr. Kevin Baughman has announced that he will retire effective June 30, 2011, after serving the district for the past nine years.

The board has retained Mr. Alan Pole of the education consulting firm Castallo & Silky from Syracuse, New York to assist the board with search. Mr. Pole is a retired BOCES superintendent with extensive experience in conducting superintendent searches. During several meetings with Mr. Pole this fall, the board established parameters for the search process, which will include community and staff focus groups, an online survey, advertising of the vacancy, recruiting of potential candidates, the interview timeline and the composition of interview committees of staff and community members.

At the present time, the Board of Education is interested in public input for a profile of the new superintendent. An online survey is posted on the Niskayuna district website www.niskayunaschools.org. Staff, students, and the community are encouraged to complete the survey, which will be available until Feb. 4, 2011.

In addition to the online survey, the Board of Education will convene four public forums to solicit input on priorities for the district and for the new superintendent. Although the forums are scheduled for specific groups within the district, they are open meetings and anyone may attend any of the forums.

The forum for K-12 faculty will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 19 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Little Theatre at Niskayuna High School, 1626 Balltown Road, Niskayuna. The community forum for parents, students and members of the public will be held on the evening of Jan. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the new Library/Media Center at Niskayuna High School.

The forum for the district’s leadership council, including directors, principals and other administrators, will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 25, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Board Room at the District Office, Van Antwerp Middle School, 1239 Van Antwerp Road, Niskayuna. This will be followed by a forum for district support staff from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the same location.

The discussion at the forums will focus on identifying: what were the most significant accomplishments in recent years; what important priorities lie ahead; what are the challenges and opportunities for the district in accomplishing these priorities; and what characteristics are important for the new superintendent to possess.

Individuals with questions about the forums may contact Cindy Gagnon at the district office, at 377-4666 extension 50706, or at cgagnon@niskyschools.org.
