Summer provides time and opportunity for building project progress

Seven of the Niskayuna's eight buildings are currently under construction. While preliminary work began this summer at Birchwood, Hillside and Rosendale elementary schools, construction and renovations are winding down at Glencliff and Craig elementary schools. Crews have made much progress on construction and renovations at the high school and at Van Antwerp Middle School. “At this point, the building project is roughly 40 percent complete, is within budget and remains on an approximate timeline for completion in 2010," said Superintendent of Schools Kevin Baughman.

Framing new classrooms in the high school's two-story wing
Work on the new two-story classroom addition and new media center at the high school is progressing rapidly. Crews are finishing up the installation of piping for the new heating system and wiring for the electrical system in the new additions, and have begun framing-in the new classrooms and other instructional spaces. Preliminary work in several of the high school’s existing wings was completed this summer to prepare for classroom renovations and installation of piping and wiring for the building’s new geothermal heating system.
Site work continues as crews prepare to pave the new parking areas adjacent to the Balltown Road and Nott Street entrances leading to the high school campus. It is expected that the parking areas will be ready for the start of school in September.

Craig and Glencliff new classroom additions complete
Construction of the new classroom additions at Glencliff and Craig elementary schools has been completed. Glencliff was able to utilize its five new rooms before school ended in June. Meanwhile, Craig’s four-classroom addition will be open to students in September. Renovations, such as new windows and casework, in existing classrooms continue throughout the summer. Work at Glencliff will be finished by September, while the remaining work at Craig will be wrapped up during second shift throughout the fall.

Expansion, renovation of VA’s science rooms on track
Renovations to Van Antwerp Middle School science classrooms and relocation of the home and careers room are underway and expected to be complete by the start of school. Crews are also finishing work on the heating and ventilation system. A ramp that will improve handicapped accessibility by connecting two levels on the building’s second floor is expected to be in place by September.

Construction, renovations underway at Birchwood, Hillside and Rosendale elementary schools
Preliminary work including the removal of old floors and floor tile in specific areas of Birchwood, Hillside and Rosendale elementary schools is also underway. Old materials were also removed from boiler rooms and crawl spaces at each school to prepare for the installation of new heating and ventilation systems. Crews will erect temporary fencing to cordon off the areas where construction is set to begin this year on each school’s new classroom addition.
