Student performance
Below is general information and statistics about Niskayuna students. For more test results and graduation statistics, the 2008-09 Niskayuna High School Profile can also be downloaded here as a PDF document.

Niskayuna students' test scores on New York State exams consistently rank among the highest in the region and state. Data released by the New York State Education Department (SED) in its School District Report Card shows the majority of Niskayuna students continue to meet or exceed state standards in English language arts, math and science. The SED report outlined results on standardized state tests in English language arts, math and science administered during the 2006-07 school year to students in grades 4 and 8, as well as statistics about high school achievement. Details are available online from the New York State Education Department.

In November 2006, the school district compiled its own report summarizing data from the 2005-06 school year when state testing in English and math was expanded to encompass grades 3-8. The report also encapsulates high school performance on Regents exams and Advanced Placement exams as well as the district's graduation rate. The 20-page document can be downloaded here as a PDF document.

Niskayuna students are prepared for the future. Niskayuna schools offer a comprehensive program that meets the needs of all students. The majority of Niskayuna graduates attend college, including the most prestigious universities in the nation. Post high school plans for the Class of 2008 were: 72% attended a four-year college or university; 21% attended a two-year college; 1% joined the military; 4% pursued employment and 2% pursued other opportunities.

Niskayuna students challenge themselves by taking a wide variety of Advanced Placement and Honors courses. In 2008, 234 students wrote 425 AP exams, and 91% scored 3 or higher (out of 4). For additional graduation and high school test statistics, download the 2008-09 High School Profile (this is a PDF document). Driven by student interest, the Niskayuna High School's offerings include 45 honors and 18 AP classes. (For a complete listing of Niskayuna High School's courses, browse through the 2009-10 Program of Studies.

Niskayuna students are active in their communities. All schools regularly participate in community-minded activities, from coat and food drives to tutoring students and visiting with local senior citizens. In 2006, more than 50 students were recognized for their volunteer work by receiving a Presidents Volunteer Service Award, a national program sponsored locally by N-CAP. Four students were also nominated for the Capital District YMCA's Outstanding Youth Award in spring 2006.

Niskayuna students perform well on national exams. In 2008-09, eight Niskayuna High School students were named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, based on their performance on the national PSAT exam. Another 21 students received letters of commendation for their scores.

Niskayuna students are enthusiastic and consistently excel not only in academics, but also in athletics and the arts. A few examples of recent recognitions include that students were chosen by the New York State Band Directors Association to participate in honor bands, a high school student won the Outstanding Performer Award at the Schenectady Light Opera Company High School Musical Theater Awards and student-produced videos were chosen to appear at the Reel Teens USA Festival. Examples of other student awards are also listed on this site.
