Acceleration
Subject
Area or Content Acceleration I Reading or Math
If evidence is established that a student needs
out of grade placement for a single subject for
all or part of a grade level’s course of study,
the student will be placed in the most
appropriate setting. This option includes math
and reading for grades 3-4.
Grade
Acceleration: For a very few students
needing significantly accelerated instruction,
out-of-grade grouping for part of the
instructional day is available as needed.
Students who are served by cross-grade grouping
may participate for all or only part of the
school year, depending on individual needs.
Requests to accelerate, or skip a grade, are
determined on an individual basis in accordance
with a needs assessment. The principal requests
evidence and the advice of teachers and the
school team to determine a student’s academic,
social, emotional, physical, and motivational
maturity (please refer to Board of Education
Policy 4750 regarding promotion and retention of
students).
Multiple sources of quantitative and qualitative
information are used to identify students with
very high academic potential, achievement, and
motivation who need specially designed
instruction to be successful. The quantitative
information is gathered from standardized tests
designed to gauge academic potential and
achievement of gifted students. The qualitative
information is gathered from parents’ and
teachers’ input to help identify students whose
academic potential and achievement may not be
demonstrated conclusively through standardized
testing. Both aptitude and achievement test
scores are reviewed during the identification
process.
